About the Mita System

Background Information..
The Mita System included the Mit'a, which was paid by sending one of its male members to work to work for the government. This tax was due every year, and its period of service was from a few days to a few months.

The Mit'a workers built the cities, roads, and the agricultural terraces. The workers also worked in mines, and carried crops from the fields to the storehouses. They served in the homes of the nobles, and they soldiered the army.
Apart from the Mit'a, there was another called the agricultural tax. To pay this tax, householders had to help plant, tend, and harvest the crops that belonged to the emperor and the temples. The commoners also looked after the imperial and temple herds.
But let us not forget about the women. They were exempt from the mit'a, but they, as well as their children, worked in the fields of the emperor and temples. Like the men, once a year, the woman of each household had to make at least one woven garment, which went into the emperor's warehouses and other places as well.
